I officially have all of my pieces cut and shaved to my liking. I got a piece of wood last week that had some holes in it from a previous project, so I took some wood filler, filled in the holes, and then sanded away the excess once the wood filler dried. I then painted the board a blue/green color to resemble the ocean. Tomorrow I am planning on gluing my pieces down to the board so I will be able to grout on Tuesday. I will update with pictures as soon as I finish!
I really enjoyed innovation time throughout my senior year. If you look at my first couple of posts, you can see that I was lost at the beginning of the year. However, I really enjoyed it as soon as I was able to figure out what I wanted to do! I felt like innovation time was very meaningful since we were each able to go out and do what interested us. It was very meaningful to see what interested my classmates and the abilities that we all have. Overall, I like the idea of innovation time a lot!!

This past week was very similar to the week before. I just spent innovation time cutting out some more glass pieces. I have now moved onto the head of the turtle and I am going to make it out of a mix of clear and colored glass. I am lucky that I am taking an art class because I have been using that time as well to create my piece. This has been extremely helpful since we only have innovation class once a week. I am becoming hopeful that I will be able to complete this piece before I am done with school!
During this past week, I was able to make decent progress on my turtle. I spent innovation time cutting out pieces, and I am now almost done with all of the clear pieces. I cut out a few pieces of the green that I had in my post last week, but I have not moved onto any other colors yet. I am hoping that I can finish up the clear and green next week so I can move onto the next color.
This past week, I was able to finish cutting out all of my paper pieces. After I finished, I still had enough time to start cutting out my glass pieces. I want to work on one or two colors at a time just because I feel like I am the most efficient that way. Hopefully I can make decent progress on this piece during the next couple of weeks.
As a senior, I only have a month and a half left of school..that's not taking into account the days I won't have class due to spring break, days off, or testing. I was thinking about my originally sketch and, realistically, there would be no way I would be able to finish it before I finish school. Instead of just scratching the idea, we decided to scale it down. So this week was another week of cutting the sketch out. The picture I am including is a comparison. I placed the new, scaled-down pieces on top of the original sketch. I am really hoping that I can finally get to cutting glass this week so I can actually get started and see the piece start to come together!
I finally finished cutting out all of the pieces this week! Now I am working on envisioning how I want the glass in the piece to look. Originally, I wanted to have iridescent blue/green glass for the head and fins, but I am started to stray away from that idea. I am starting to learn more towards using clear glass for the head and fins now. I would cut out the clear glass for those pieces and then I would glue them onto a surface. I would paint the surface where the fins and head would go a blue/green color so it could show through. This would allow me to use the blue/green glass I have somewhere within the shell of the turtle. I am also thinking about mixing in some non-iridescent glass within the piece as well, but this part is still up in the air.
This picture was taken as I was trying to get a rough idea of how the colors would look together. Since I finished sketching last week, I worked on making a copy of my piece and cutting the pieces out this week. The piece is quite large, so I had to make multiple copies in order to have a copy of all of the pieces. I spent innovation class and two art classes copying and cutting pieces out. I have over 100 pieces in this sketch, so I am still not quite done cutting them all out. By the end of this week, I should have all of my pieces cut out and I should be able to start cutting glass!
My goal for this past week was to finish sketching my turtle and that's exactly what happened! I worked on finishing up my pencil sketch during innovation time and art class. Finishing up the body of the turtle wasn't very difficult. The fins and head were what took me the longest. Drawing one fin was simple, but trying to get the opposite fin to match it exactly took me a while. I eventually was able to get them to match by placing marks at matching widths and lengths so I had a reference for the fin I was drawing. As for the head, this part took me the longest. I just seemed to have the hardest time creating a head that proportionally matched the body of the turtle. I started off with a head that was way too big for the body, so I slowly started to take more and more off each side of the head until I was satisfied with the shape. I just finished up tracing my pencil outline with sharpie; I also finished up numbering each piece. Now I get to start cutting glass! Currently, I am still working on my sketch. I'm running into problems deciding how I want to sketch out the pieces of glass that would make up the body of the turtle. I have to keep in mind that they need to be shapes that I would be able to cut out. For this following week, my goal is to at least have the body of the turtle finished so I can start working on cutting the glass.
Speaking of the glass, I was able to sort through iridescent pieces of glass this past week and I currently have a container that has all of my glass it. Once I finish up my sketch, I can go through the glass I chose and decide what pieces I want to use for each part of the turtle. This past week, I decided that I wanted my glass piece to be a turtle. The pieces I was inspired by used iridescent glass which was stunning! Right now, I am sketching my turtle out with pencil and I will eventually go over the lines with sharpie once I am satisfied with my sketch. I do plan on using iridescent glass, but I think I want to mix in some regular color glass as well. The plan is to solder the glass together as opposed to gluing and grouting. This will be a new process to me since I have never soldered glass before. I will include pictures of my sketch once I am finished!
